WoW Forever takes place before Burning Crusade, in a small time bubble

From the fall of Lordaeron to Warcraft III and Classic, how does Forever fit into Azeroth?

It can be a bit hard to figure out where WoW Forever fits into the Warcraft timeline, and the reality is a little unusual. Blizzard is returning to the era of the original World of Warcraft, shortly after the events of Warcraft III, but they do not plan to follow the same path towards later expansions. Instead, Forever has its own timeline, giving Blizzard room to add new zones, characters, and stories without changing the events that define Classic Azeroth.

Here is how it all fits together, and what that means for the future of Forever.

Forever Takes Place During the Early Days of Classic WoW

Blizzard describes Forever as beginning where the original World of Warcraft started, during the early "Year 1" period of Azeroth. This is the era before Lord Kazzak reopens the Dark Portal, setting the stage for The Burning Crusade.

In practical terms, Forever takes place after the events of Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, in the same broad period as the original WoW experience released in 2004. The Horde is established in Durotar under Thrall, Sylvanas Windrunner leads the Forsaken from the Undercity, and the aftermath of the Battle of Mount Hyjal is still part of Azeroth's recent history.

This is also why later locations and events from WoW's expansions are not part of Forever's starting point. Northrend has not become the setting for the next big conflict, Deathwing has not returned to devastate Azeroth, and the Dark Portal has not reopened. So basically, Forever is set before these events take place.

Warcraft III: Forsaken Kingdom Fills the Gap Before Forever

There is now a new chapter to play before stepping into Forever. Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom tells the story of what happened after Arthas returned to Lordaeron, filling in the four-year gap between Warcraft III and World of Warcraft. It begins with the Last Days of Lordaeron, follows Sylvanas and the Forsaken as they establish the Undercity and join the Horde, and it also introduces Garek Bandarion, a Forsaken warrior whose story connects to the new Forsaken Paladin in Forever.

Blizzard has confirmed that Forever continues shortly after the events of this campaign. That teaches you what you need to know about the Forsaken's early history, including why the Undercity exists and why some of its inhabitants distrust Forsaken paladins.

If you want to follow the story in chronological order, Forsaken Kingdom is now the direct lead-in to Forever.

Why WoW Forever Has Its Own Time Bubble

Blizzard uses the term "time bubble" when they describe Forever's story. The idea is to add new adventures to the original Azeroth without canceling or overwriting the established events.

Blizzard groups these into three categories:

  • Anticipated: Places players have known about for years but could not previously explore, such as Mount Hyjal.

  • New but familiar: New stories and areas connected to existing locations and factions, such as the Riverglades.

  • Unexpected: Less predictable additions, such as Zephras Isle and the Skyborne.

That approach gives Blizzard room to add content while preserving the foundations of Classic Azeroth.

Will WoW Forever Ever Move Beyond Classic?

For now, Blizzard is expanding Azeroth horizontally instead of advancing the timeline. Forever is designed as a permanent experience alongside Modern WoW and Classic, with new stories and updates built around the original level 1-60 world. That means they can introduce new zones, dungeons, raids, and character stories without following the same sequence of events as the original game, and the new content will just build on existing lore.

There are still unanswered questions. Blizzard has not confirmed if big events such as the opening of Ahn'Qiraj or the arrival of Naxxramas will return in their original forms. The team has also announced a reworked iconic raid for summer 2027 without naming it in the Found Photos recap.

The safest assumption is that Forever will continue adding stories within its established time bubble. It is a place to keep building on original Azeroth.
