Diablo 4 Rebirth Guide: How to Convert Eternal Characters to Seasonal

Diablo 4's Rebirth system gives you a way to bring an existing character into a new Season instead of creating a completely new one from scratch. Basically, Rebirth converts an Eternal character into a Seasonal character and resets them to Level 1. Your character's identity stays intact, but their seasonal journey will start over.

This can be useful if you have a character you have already spent a lot of time customizing and want to continue using the same character across multiple Seasons.

What Is Rebirth in Diablo 4?

Rebirth allows you to take a character from the Eternal realm and move them into the Seasonal realm.

Rebirth resets the character to Level 1, so you still have to level them and progress through the new Season like any other Seasonal character. However, you will not have to recreate the character's class, name, appearance, or other cosmetic choices.

Diablo 4 also keeps a running total of hours played on that character across all Rebirths, so you can track how much time you have spent with them over multiple Seasons.

What Carries Over With Rebirth?

Rebirth keeps the main aspects of your character, including:

• Class

• Name

• Appearance

• Normal or Hardcore status

• Cosmetic preferences saved as part of a set

• Transmogs

• Pigments

• Mounts and mount accessories

• Pets

• Portals

• Headstones

This means Rebirth is primarily about simply keeping the name and appearance of an old character exactly as it was, and reusing that character in the new season.

What Happens to Your Gear and Items?

This is the most important thing to understand before using Rebirth.

Your gear and items do not stay with the character when you Rebirth them.

Before using Rebirth, Blizzard recommends moving any gear or other items you want to keep into your Eternal stash, and the game will even warn you before confirming Rebirth if the character still has items in their inventory. You will then have the option to remove the items or destroy them. If you destroy them, they are gone from Eternal Realm as well.

If you have any items equipped or stored in your personal inventory, they will be lost.

So you have to make sure your character's inventory is empty before confirming the Rebirth. Nothing on you and nothing in your inventory.

Rebirth basically resets or removes:

• Character level, back to level 1

• All equipped gear

• Everything in your personal inventory

• Your build (Paragon, and Skill points)

The Issue With the Cosmetics

This is the part that is easy to get wrong. Blizzard made it sound like your cosmetics automatically follow the character, but this is not really the case. Transmogs and pigments, mounts and accessories, pets, portals, and headstones carry over only when they are saved as part of an ensemble.

So before you Rebirth, open your wardrobe and save your current look as an ensemble on that character. Do that, and your full cosmetic setup travels with them. Skip it, and you can end up reapplying your whole transmog by hand once the character lands in the Season realm.

To be clear, you are not losing the cosmetics themselves. Appearances you have unlocked stay on your account no matter what. What the ensemble save protects is the applied look on that specific character, so the point is saving yourself the rebuild, not rescuing anything permanent.

Should You Use the Rebirth Feature?

Rebirth is mainly useful if you have an Eternal character you want to keep using for future Seasonal adventures. If you do not particularly care about keeping the same character, creating a new Seasonal one works just as well. Rebirth simply saves you from having to recreate the character's appearance and other details. It is also a great way to save character slots. If you have a habit of doing multiple characters per season, your slots are most likely already full, so Rebirth is a great way of recycling older characters.

Do not Rebirth a character that you still plan on using on Eternal either, because once he is moved over, he will only move back to Eternal at the end of the season.

How to Rebirth a Character

Using a character for Rebirth is not very hard, you just need to follow a few easy steps:

1. Log in to the character on Eternal.

2. Move any gear and items you want to keep into your Eternal stash.

3. Make sure the character has nothing equipped or in their personal inventory.

4. Save your look. Open the wardrobe and save your current cosmetic setup as an ensemble so it carries over. This step is optional, but skipping it means rebuilding your transmog later.

5. Go back to the character screen.

6. Select an eligible character from the character selection screen.

7. Choose the Rebirth option.

8. Read the warning. You will get a prompt telling you any items still on the character will be lost, with the option to remove them or destroy them. If you already stashed everything, you are clear.

9. Confirm the Rebirth by typing in your character's name.

10. Your character will move to the Seasonal realm and reset to Level 1.
