WoW Forever is leaving dungeon maps out to encourage exploration

Blizzard says dungeon maps make it too easy to skip enemies and head straight for the exit.

World of Warcraft: Forever probably will not get dungeon maps, and Blizzard has a specific reason for leaving them out. In the latest "Dive into Dungeons with Devs" podcast, the developers explained that maps encourage players to take the shortest route and skip enemies instead of exploring the dungeons.

And that is precisely what they do not want in Forever.

Dungeons Are Supposed to Be a Threatening Adventure

If you did not watch that Podcast yet, we highly recommend it. The team went over the Dungeon maps at around 19:40 in the video. There is a pretty cool quote from there that is honestly really true.

"We want you to feel like it's an adventure and it's threatening, and we want you to go explore those nooks and crannies."

Having a map makes it easier to figure out the fastest path and avoid all the unnecessary encounters. Or well... what you might think is an unnecessary encounter. But without one, you have to explore the different corners of a dungeon and see what you might otherwise miss. The goal is not to race to the Boss and then be done with it.

This does not mean that Blizzard will not eventually add maps one day, but you will definitely not get those at launch.

For players used to modern WoW's built-in dungeon maps, this means getting familiar with layouts the old-fashioned way. It may take longer, but Blizzard wants exploration to remain part of the experience in WoW: Forever. And given how cool everything looks, it is for a good reason. You never know what you could find in this tiny lost corner if you never adventure there.
