Enchanting is the easiest crafting system in Diablo 4 and the one that eats the most Gold. At the Occultist, you pick one affix on an item and reroll it into something else.

The complexity is in the limits, and the limits are strict. We will go over all of them, as well as the cost, and when you should enchant your items.

The Rules That Define Enchanting

You can only enchant one affix per item. The first affix you choose is the only one that item can ever enchant. You can reroll that same affix as many times as your Gold and materials allow, but the other affixes will not be affected by enchanting permanently.

This makes the first click more important than it looks. If you choose Strength to enchant, for example, you cannot later decide that you would rather reroll Cooldown Reduction instead. There is no way to undo that choice.

Enchanting also binds the item. The moment you enchant an item, it becomes account-bound. So if you were planning to trade the item, do not enchant it first.

An enchantment cannot create a Greater Affix. Rerolling an affix will not turn it into a Greater Affix, no matter how many times you try. If you need a GA, you need to use another system that can create Greater Affixes.

When it comes to GA, there is also another problem, because enchanting a Greater Affix can replace it with a normal version of the new affix. If you are rerolling a GA, make sure you really want to give it up.

However, enchanting can protect a normal or Greater affix for the Horadric Cube. The Cube has recipes that can reroll affixes or affix values, but protect enchanted affixes. This makes enchanting relevant even when you are happy with the affix itself. If you enchant it and select "No Change," it will mark it as enchanted and protect it from the Cube's affix reroll system.

How Enchanting Works

Head to the Occultist and open the Enchanting tab. Place the item you want to modify into the slot, then select the affix you wish to replace. In the same tab, you can click on "View Possible Affixes" to check the pool of affixes it can reroll to before spending your Gold. If the stat you want is not listed, no amount of rerolling will make it appear.

After enchanting, you can choose one of the new rolls or keep the existing affix by selecting "No Change." Keeping the current affix still costs the enchantment price, and the next attempt will still cost more, so do not feel forced to pick one of the affixes if the one you are trying to get rid of is still better than the new ones.

Once you confirm a new affix, that becomes the item's enchanted affix. You can continue rerolling that same affix, but you cannot select another affix on the item to enchant.

What Can You Enchant?

Enchanting works on the item's base affixes, but there are important restrictions.

You can enchant:

• Rare, Legendary and Unique item affixes

• Mythic and Iconic Mythic Unique random affixes

The item's Unique or Aspect Power cannot be rerolled through the enchanting system.

Uniques can be enchanted in the current system, including Mythic Uniques and Iconic Mythics. This is particularly useful for endgame Unique items where one unwanted affix is holding back an otherwise good drop. Instead of waiting for a perfect version to drop, you can use Enchanting to replace that one affix.

On Mythic Uniques, the enchanted affix rolls at its maximum value automatically, making the system particularly useful.

Enchanting Does Not Affect Tempered Affixes

Tempering and Enchanting are separate systems. You cannot select a Tempered affix at the Occultist and replace it through Enchanting. If a Temper is bad, you have to use the Tempering system to reroll it.

This also means that you should not confuse an item's original affixes with its tempered affix when deciding what to reroll.

How Much Does Enchanting Cost?

Every enchantment costs Gold and crafting materials. The Gold cost increases each time you reroll the same item. The first few attempts can feel cheap, but the price rises quickly. An item that looked inexpensive to fix can eventually cost millions of Gold for a single attempt if you keep landing on affixes you do not need. You might get the right one directly, or you could spend the next hour rerolling the same thing.

The material cost also depends on the item. Normal Legendaries will cost less Gold and less materials than an Ancestral item.

This is why enchanting is one of the easiest ways to burn through a large amount of Gold without realizing it, so you have to remain careful.

When Should You Enchant an Item?

If an item has three good affixes and one useless one, replacing that single bad affix makes sense. If two or more of its affixes are wrong, however, you are generally better off looking for another item or using the cube.

A simple rule to follow is:

• One bad affix = consider enchanting

• Two or more bad affixes = start looking for another item

There are exceptions for extremely rare drops, especially items with valuable Greater Affixes, but the basic principle will save you a lot of Gold.

Enchanting Before Upgrading a Mythic

The Horadric Cube's Upgrade to Mythic recipe carries the item's existing modifications over to the upgraded item. So if you are preparing an item for this, make sure its affixes, Tempering, and other modifications are done before upgrading it.
