Diablo 4 brought back Diablo 2's loot pinata Pindleskin in Season 15, and his loot is disappointing
Pindleskin can appear in Nightmare Dungeons and drops completely random loot!
Diablo 4 Season 15 has already resurrected plenty of classic Diablo content, but this one is particularly nostalgic for anyone who spent far too much time farming Pindleskin in Diablo 2.
You probably noticed that there are a few new Nightmare Dungeons that lead to old Diablo games, and it looks like they come with a new affix called "Echo of Pindleskin", which causes the classic monster to wander the dungeon.
And unlike the usual Nightmare Dungeon affixes, this one comes with a pretty interesting promise:
"The Echo of Pindleskin wanders this dungeon, and may drop any item in the game when killed."
Naturally, now everyone is looking for the old loot pinata legend.
Pindleskin Is Back
For anyone who did not spend their teenage years repeatedly running the same monster in Diablo 2, Pindleskin is a Super Unique found outside Nihlathak's Temple in Act V.
He became a popular farming target because he was extremely quick to reach and could drop a huge amount of valuable items. You could repeatedly kill him for Uniques and other rare loot, making Pindleskin one of the best targets.
Season 15 Appears to Be Giving Him a New Job
Now in Diablo 4, he is not in a specific location, so you cannot target farm him, but the Echo of Pindleskin can appear as an additional affix on certain Nightmare Dungeon keys, including the new dungeon variants recreating locations from previous Diablo games.
Once inside, you are supposed to encounter Pindleskin somewhere in the dungeon. The exact encounter can apparently be easy to miss, though. It looks like he is just a random normal enemy, so if you have a speedfarming build, you are going to run over him without even noticing who it was.
Do Not Expect the Best Loot
The wording makes Pindleskin sound like Sanctuary's newest loot dispenser, but from what we could find, the reality is a little less exciting.
He does not particularly drop anything special, and even in Torment XII you might not get anything big. However, he does have a chance of dropping any random Unique from the game, and that includes those from other classes. Some people on Warlock seemed to get Sorcerer or Rogue items, for example.
That appears to be the main thing behind the "any item in the game" wording. Pindleskin is not necessarily going to give you something useful for your character, and he might just hand you a Unique for the class you are not playing. Which is, in a way, pretty faithful to Diablo 2's loot-farming experience.
Pindleskin's return fits perfectly with Season 15's obsession with Diablo 2. We have already seen classic Runewords secretly added to Diablo 4, along with other callbacks and recreated locations from throughout the franchise. The new Nightmare Dungeon system takes that idea even further by letting you enter dungeons inspired by previous Diablo games, including Diablo 2, Diablo 3, and even Diablo Immortal.
Most of these dungeons initially look normal beyond their enemies and environments. Then you get a key with Echo of Pindleskin attached to it, and suddenly you are back to farming the undead monster from Nihlathak's Temple. The big difference is that Diablo 4 does not turn Pindleskin into a reliable source of specific loot, since he really just gives you a random item.
So if you are chasing a particular Unique, do not expect Pindleskin to solve your problems.
And whatever Pindleskin technically is, at least he is still doing alright, even after all the beating he took in Diablo 2.
