Overwatch Stadium had a promising idea, so what went wrong?

Long matches, confusing builds, and long queues have left players questioning Stadium's direction.

Overwatch Stadium was a good idea on paper. You get custom builds, new abilities, and your heroes would almost feel like completely different characters.

But now, it has lost over half of its player base. So what went wrong?

Overwatch Stadium Asks for a Lot of Your Time

The biggest problem is probably the amount of time one match takes. Compared to a normal Quick Play or even a normal Competitive match, a Stadium game takes ages, with the multiple rounds interrupted by the powers you have to pick and all of that.

One Stadium match is equivalent to 2 or 3 normal Quick Play rounds.

Stadium also has a ton of new systems that you need to learn before you can make good choices. So when you just want to jump into a match after work, that is a lot of extra work for not a lot of fun.

On top of that, a few heroes and builds really struggled in that mode, so everyone ended up playing the same characters. And Blizzard nerfed good builds instead of making weaker ones stronger.

Stadium ended up feeling like a chore, and not something fun anymore.

Long Queues Make the Problem Worse

Blizzard made the mistake of splitting the mode between Quick Play and Competitive, and that was not the best idea, because it split the already small player base into two.

It made it even harder to find matches, especially if you also queue for specific roles.

No one has time to wait 45 minutes in a queue for matches that last just as long, if not longer, with nerfed builds that are not fun anymore.

Stadium was not a bad idea. If you compare it to the latest Halloween event where you can pick new hero powers, it is not that different. You get a fun little mode where you can play around with new abilities.

The problem is that it is a system that needs more care. It works for events because no one cares about the balance of an event that is removed a few weeks later anyway.

But for a permanent mode, it would need more adjustments and care for players to be more interested in it.
