Instead of relying mostly on gear drops while playing, players can build perfect pieces of gear using the Cube: add affixes, remove affixes, recycle Uniques, craft runes, and push finished items to an even better item.
It is the one in-game system with the most recipes, materials, and ways to improve an item. It has potential for more seasonal crafting as well. This page covers not just what each recipe does, but when it is the right call to use them.
Unlocking the Cube

Finish the Lord of Hatred campaign. The Cube unlocks at the end of The Land of Fire questline and you can find it directly in Temis. Once one character has done it, it is unlocked account wide. There is no shortcut, or side quest version. If you skipped the campaign, this is a reason to go back.
Which Material Do You Need

There are three types of materials needed to use the Horadric Cube:
Primordial Dust is the base material. It exists in different rarity:
Raw Primordial Dust,
Coarse Primordial Dust,
Refined Primordial Dustand
Pure Primordial Dust, plus even rarer variants (
Volatile Primordial Dust,
Enhanced Primordial Dust,
Attuned Primordial Dust,
Resonant Primordial Dust) for the heavy recipes like Transfiguration and Unique Power Reroll. Raw Dust starts dropping from elites early and is account bound. You will often feel short on the mats you need, so make sure to use the rarer ones when really needed.Tuning Prisms are the most important ones to collect, and save, as they affect the randomness of the different crafting recipes you want to use. Tuning Prisms are stored in your inventory in the Consumables tab. Prisms drop from different activities like War Plans, Tree of Whispers and Undercity as well as from Elites in the open world.
Infused Horadric Resin exists only for Talisman crafting and comes only from salvaging Charms and Seals, so salvage unuseful items or duplicates instead of selling them.
Tuning Prisms Help Target Certain Affixes
Horadric Cube recipes work with a very wide affix pool. A Tuning Prism will help specify the affix pool to a certain category of affixes. This makes a big difference overall and will help you feel more like crafting rather than gambling.
Find below, what prism types exist, what they target and in which recipe you can use them:
Tuning Prism (Type) | Affixes | Recipes |
|---|---|---|
(Offensive) | All Damage Multiplier | Add Affix |
(Defensive) | Armor | Add Affix |
(Resources) | Energy, Essence, Faith, Fury, Mana, Spirit, Vigor, Wrath Regeneration | Add Affix |
(Utility and Quality of Life) | Attacks Reduce Evade's Cooldown by Seconds | Add Affix |
(Resistances) | Cold, Fire, Lightning, Physical, Poison, Shadow Resistance All Resistance | Add Affix |
(Main Stat, Skills) | Dexterity, Intelligence, Strength, Willpower | Add Affix |
| Removes the riskiest but also the most powerful outcomes. | Transfigure Item |
| Only usable on Amulets. Adds a random bonus Utility Legendary Aspect. Allows the item to stay Modifiable after Transfiguration. | Transfigure Item |
Prisms are not consumed if a recipe fails, only on success. However, a prism spent on a temporary item is a prism wasted. Make sure to use your rarer prism only on items you want to keep for a long time.
Horadric Cube Item Modification Recipes
The Horadric Cube can help you modify and improve your gear. Here are the recipes available in the Cube:
Add Affix
This recipe adds a new affix on an item with an open slot. It can only be used on Common, Magic, and Rare items before they have 4 affixes. You can use a prism to target a certain category of affixes.
This recipe is the reason Common, Magic and Rare items are suddenly worth picking up. A white item is a clean base with no competing affixes, and experienced players build some of their best-in-slot pieces from them.
For example, one of the best way to get perfect Greater Affix pieces of gear is to grab 900 item power Magic and Rare drops that already carry a wanted Greater Affix or two/three correct normal affixes, and target add affixes that suits your needs. A good Legendary drop is rare enough that crafting from a good base at the Horadric Cube is generally faster.
Remove Affix
This recipe deletes an affix from your piece of gear. Without a prism, it removes a random one. But with the right prism, you can target the category of the affix to remove.
You can decrease the rarity of your item by removing affixes. By deleting an affix from a Legendary, the item will become Rare. You can remove all affixes until the item is Common.
Chaotic Reroll and Focused Reroll
Both recipes allows you to reroll an affix into another.
The Chaotic recipe rerolls affixes at random. However you can target which affix to reroll by slotting a prism for the type of the affix you wish to remove. You cannot decide what the type of affix will reroll to instead.
Focused rerolls requires a prism and allows you to reroll an affix of that prism's category, into another of the same type.
Uniques and Mythic Uniques' affixes cannot be be modified by the Horadric Cube.
Affix Value Reroll
If you want to reroll the values of the current affixes on your piece of gear, you can use this recipe. It will randomize the value of all base affixes on the equipment piece.
This recipe will not modify the value of enchanted, tempered, greater, and transfigured affixes, nor Legendary or Unique Powers.
It can also be used on Talisman pieces (Charms and Seals).
Unique Power Reroll
This recipe will reroll the value of the power on a Unique. It is expensive in Dust, but worth it on an item with good affixes rolls but with a low Unique Power roll.
Transfiguration
As final step in the crafting order, you can transfigure the item. This step is quite complex and deserve its own guide. Please check the dedicated Transfiguration guide below (coming soon.)
Horadric Cube Item Transmutation Recipes
The Horadric Cube can also assist you in crafting entirely new equipment pieces, or transmuting multiple items into a new one.
Upgrade to Legendary
You can upgrade a Rare item to Legendary, giving it a random Aspect. To help you target aspects you might still need to gather in the Codex of Power, you can use a Tuning Prism to select the category of the Aspect the Legendary will roll with.
It is a bit expensive, but it can help you fill up your Codex of Power, and turn items you do not wish to keep into new aspects you will want to salvage or keep.
Recycle Uniques
This recipe allows you to turn three copies of the same Unique, or Unique Charms, into a new version of this Unique with new affixes and Unique Power rolls.
This is actually one of the highest-leverage recipes in the game. Because it removes drop luck from items you are chasing. Stack three bad rolls of your build's Unique, recycle, repeat.
Upgrade to Mythic
You can transmute one specific Ancestral Unique item into a Mythic Unique, retaining all existing item properties. However, you can only equip one Crafted Mythic Unique. This recipe requires 5
Resplendent Spark.
Full walkthrough in the Mythic crafting guide (coming soon.)
Talismans and Runes Crafting
There are several recipes that can help you manage your growing stack of Charms and Seals to find the right set for your build.
3 to 1 Transmutation
You can transmute 3 of the same equipment, Talismans or Runes into a random new item of that same type. This is especially convenient when you are looking for something specific like a Set Charm, or a better Seal.
Craft Unique Charm
If you are looking for a Unique Charm in particular for your build, you can transmute a Unique into this specific Unique Charm. However, players will need 3 other Unique Charms to recycle in this process to get to the Unique Charm they are chasing.
Reroll Set Charm
This recipe allows you to transmute a Set Charm into a different charm of the same set. It can help you get to your 5 set bonus quicker. Also, it keeps the item power to match what you put in at first, so an Ancestral Charm will reroll into another Ancestral Charm. You have also have good chances to get a Greater Affix on your Set Charm.

Rune Crafting
Five of any Legendary Runes, five Rare Runes and one specific Magic Rune will make one of the very rare Legendary Runes.
If you are chasing after a specific Legendary Ritual or Invocation Rune, make sure to check if you can craft it in the Horadric Cube.
Amalgamation at the Horadric Cube
The Horadric Cube can upgrade some of your Nightmare Sigils, Boss Materials, and Tributes. Most consumables and keys can be upgraded in the Cube.
Players will find it easier to get better Tributes for Undercity or even Escalating Nightmare keys by crafting them in the Cube.
This transmutation often requires 5 of the same type to create an upgraded version.
Protecting a Greater Affix During Cube Rerolls
If you enchant a Greater Affix at the Occultist and pick "No Change", the GA locks in place, and the Cube rerolls in the same category can no longer remove it.
It costs you the item's one enchant slot, but on a GA worth protecting, that trade is almost always right.
Also worth knowing for the affix recipes: normal affix rules apply inside the Cube. An item that already has Maximum Life cannot be given a second Maximum Life, and mutually exclusive affixes stay exclusive.
Advanced Trick: Affix Pool Exhaustion
The affix pool for a slot is finite, and you can use your knowledge to trick the Cube.
For example, take a blank Ancestral amulet and use Adept's Tuning Prisms to add skill affixes. By the third add, the skill pool for amulets doesn't have other alternatives and the Cube is forced to give you All Skills.

The same logic stacks All Resistance on armor with Protector's Prisms. Once a single resistance exists, the second add can only be the All Resistance affix.
This is the closest thing D4 has to deterministic crafting, and it is why the Common bases matter.
Quick answers
Frequently asked
3 questionsWhat is the most important recipe for a new player getting into Crafting?#
Recycle Uniques. It converts duplicate drops into targeted rerolls of the exact item your build wants.
Do prisms get used up on failed crafts?#
No, only on success.
Can the Cube modify a transfigured item?#
Not if the item became Unmodifiable, which most transfigurations cause. Horadric cube crafting always comes before Transfiguration.
