Diablo 4 Season 16 changes Sorcerer's Incinerate skill and reduces Firewall damage

Numerous other skills, Enchantments, and Uniques will also be reworked.

A Diablo 4 Sorceress holds flames in her hand.

The Season 16 PTR patch notes reveal extensive Sorcerer changes that may reflect an attempt to bring the strongest and weakest builds into closer alignment. Firewallbuilds have been top tier for two seasons, but nerfs may now bring them more closely in line with other Sorcerer builds.

Fortunately, the changes also bring some buffs to other skills, most notably Incinerate, as well as some Unique item adjustments, that may soften the blow to dedicated Sorcerers who want to remain high on the leaderboards.

Skill Changes

Although the Ring of Fire Firewall variant receives a significant damage reduction, dropping its damage from 300% down to 100%, numerous other skills and their variants receive upgrades.

Incinerate changes are the most significant, with a vocabulary adjustment, base damage improvements, Pull added to the base skill, and a persistent bonus for 3 seconds after Channeling, which may grant more mobility to a skill that requires standing still.

  • Incinerate

    • Damage Bonus gained from Channeling Incinerate is now termed Intensity.

    • While at maximum Intensity, the damage bonus will now persist for 3 seconds after Channeling.

    • Flamethrower Variant

      • Intensity persists for 1 additional second.

    • Disintegration Variant

      • Incinerate’s beam will now deal 140% to the first enemy hit, as well as an additional 140% damage distributed to them and among them and up to 5 surrounding enemies, whereas previously it hit the original enemy only once.

    • Healing Upgrade

      • Renamed to Damage Reduction

      • While channeling Incinerate, gain 15% damage reduction. While Injured, Incinerate heals you for 2% of your Maximum Life per enemy hit.

  • Ball Lightning

    • Implosion will have its mana cost removed, its Duration increased from 2 to 3 seconds, and its cooldown reduced from 12 to 10 seconds.

  • Familiar

    • Healing Flames Variant renamed to Lucky Light

      • Instead of restoring 1% of your maximum life per second while active, each active Familiar increases your lucky hit chance from Pyromancy Skills by 1.00%.

  • Meteor

    • Will now grant additional stacks of Overpower, receive a damage and size bonus upgrade, and will have its cooldown reduced from 15 to 10 seconds

  • Flame Shield

    • Will now increase your minimum Overpower by 1 for 2 seconds rather than simply granting 1 stack of Overpower.

  • Hydra

    • Less Overpower will be required to gain an extra head, dropping from 3 to 2.

  • Fireball

    • Frostball Variant will have its Ice Spikes increased from 3 to 5.

  • Firewall

    • Ring of Fire Variant will receive a decreased cooldown from 12-8 seconds, have its duration increased from 3.5 to 5 seconds, and its damage will be reduced from 300% to 100%.

  • Inferno

    • The Pull Upgrade is now in the base skill, while the upgrade node has been changed to 20% increased damage for Inferno.

    • Living Bomb Variant: damage increased from 106% to 225%.

  • Teleport

    • Movement Speed upgrade now also grants Unstoppable.

Enchantment Changes

The Enchantment changes again impact Incinerate, with an improvement that again allows for more mobility when using the skill. The Ice Shards Enchantment change is also a noticeable upgrade to its usefulness in Boss fights, since shards will fly toward Incapacitated rather than only Frozen enemies.

  • Incinerate

    • Instead of the requirement to stand still for 3 seconds, dealing Burning Damage 150 times will spawn a serpent that Incinerates enemies for 5 seconds.

  • Ice Shards

    • Shards will now automatically conjure and fly towards Incapacitated rather than Frozen enemies.

  • Fire Bolt

    • Dealing Damage Over Time rather than Burning damage will have a 10% chance to heal for 4% of your maximum life and unleash a Fire Bolt at a nearby enemy.

  • Firewall

    • Will no longer require Burning, and its Lucky Hit Chance will be reduced from 25% to 15%.

Aspect Changes

Aspect changes were relatively minor, but the change to how Overheating Aspect grants Overpower is worth noting for players running the many builds that incorporate it.

  • Overheating Aspect

    • Instead of a 10% chance to gain Overpower from Slain enemies, upon Lucky Hit, Fire Damage has a 15% chance to generate a stack of Overpower.

  • Scornful Aspect

    • Pyromancy skills will deal 40-60% increased damage against enemies you have attempted to knock back or immobilize in the last five seconds rather than against enemies who are Distant or Immobilized.

Unique Changes

Again, the changes are relatively minor, but the upgrade to Flamescar reflects another attempt to improve Incinerate builds

  • Molten Band

    • Increased bonus against all enemies and Attack Speed bonus from 4 to 8 seconds after killing an enemy with Critical Strike.

  • Flamescar

    • The additional mana cost and final charge with increased damage have been replaced with a flat 80-100% damage to surrounding enemies while Incinerate is at maximum Intensity.

  • Strike of Stormhorn

    • Ball Lightning damage increased from 40-60%[x] to 75-100%[x] and Explosion bonus increased from 40% to 50%.

  • Raiment of the Sea

    • Now also grants 25% damage reduction while standing in a blizzard and for 8 seconds after.

Talisman Changes

Habacalva's Cauldron 5-Piece Set Bonus now grants 50 Mana Regeneration when you Overheat at Maximum Heat, which is a nice benefit but will not make it significantly more tempting for builds not using it.

Bug Fixes

While there are numerous bug fixes listed, the standout is correcting the issue where Lingering Aspect could cause Blizzard's Ice Spikes to receive their maximum damage value, which powerful Blizzard builds seen recently were likely benefiting from.

  • Fixed an issue where Deep Freeze did not properly receive the damage bonus from Blue Rose until its Lucky Hit effect activated.

  • Fixed an issue where Blue Rose did not trigger Lucky Hit effects.

  • Fixed an issue where Lingering Aspect could cause Meteorites and Blizzard Ice Spikes to receive their maximum damage value.

  • Fixed an issue where Blue Rose's Lucky Hit effect could incorrectly reapply its damage bonus.

  • Fixed an issue where Familiar Enchantment would not summon a Prismatic Familiar unless Familiar was on the skill bar.

  • Fixed an issue where Shivering Aspect could continue calculating its damage bonus from the Stagger Meter while a Boss was staggered.

  • Fixed an issue where Orbital did not properly trigger Tal Rasha's Threefold Way set effects.

  • Fixed an issue where Enchantment Master could incorrectly apply its effect when Prismatic Familiar was used as an Enchantment.

  • Fixed an issue where Meteor's Damage and Size Bonus upgrade could apply its damage increase twice.

  • Fixed an issue where Ice Shards Enchantment could stop functioning after the Sorcerer was affected by certain Crowd Control effects.

  • Fixed an issue where Blaze Enchantment could consume Overpower while Teleport was not on cooldown.

  • Fixed an issue where Electric Blast did not properly benefit from certain damage multipliers.

  • Fixed an issue where Enchantment Master did not function correctly while using Aspect of the Enchanter.

  • Fixed an issue where Blaze Teleport's upgrade effects did not function correctly while using Aspect of Refutation.

  • Fixed an issue where Staff of Zerae did not properly roll variable damage values.

  • Fixed an issue where Living Bomb variant would occur despite not having points in the upgrade.

While the number of changes is daunting, many of them apply to less frequently used elements of the Sorcerer toolkit. The PTR may prove that these adjustments will not make much difference in how the class performs overall, but dedicated Sorcerers can hope to see some balance improvements across the build spectrum.
