Diablo 5 is real, and Sanctuary has no safe places left

Every other Diablo asked you to save the world. This one starts after you failed.

Well, there it is. Diablo 5 is officially coming in Spring 2029.

Blizzard revealed the next mainline Diablo game during BlizzCon's 2026 Opening Ceremony, and even though we only have a first glimpse right now, the premise already sounds very different from the Sanctuary we know.

As Joe Shely, Brent Gibson and Tiffany Wat stated on stage: There are no towns and no safe places,

Sanctuary has already fallen. Blizzard is building Diablo V around one question...

"What must you become when the world has already fallen?"

That alone tells us quite a bit about what Blizzard is going for in this next dark chapter of Sanctuary. We are apparently not entering a world that is still fighting to survive. This time, the world has already lost.

And the absence of towns or safe places could have huge implications for how Diablo 5 works moment to moment. Blizzard has not explained those systems yet, though, so we will have to see exactly what that means before getting carried away with theories.

We are getting more Diablo 5 today

Thankfully, we will not have to wait long for more! Blizzard has a Diablo Developer Update scheduled for later today at BlizzCon, where the team will talk about the ideas, development, and future of the franchise.

So this first announcement is clearly just the beginning. How exciting!

Diablo V is coming in Spring 2029. Sanctuary has fallen, nowhere is safe, and we should know a lot more very soon.
