Diablo 5 reveals the Demon Hunter, Monk, and terrifying new Plague Knight
Three classes, a fallen world, and an item system that grows with you.

Blizzard is not wasting any time showing us what comes after Diablo 4! They dropped a surprise Diablo 5 announcement at BlizzCon 2026, and now the team stepped back on stage for the Diablo 5: Forging the Next Era panel right after the opening ceremony. The panel was hosted by the executive producer, senior production director, senior game director, and narrative director of Diablo 5. Some of those come from Diablo 3 and Diablo 4, but there are some new faces on the team! They covered everything from the game's story and world to its classes, gameplay, itemization... so there is already a lot of information to go over!
You will notice one important difference from the Diablo games we have played before: Diablo has already won, Sanctuary has fallen. This time, this is how you start the game. Humanity lost, and you have to deal with the consequences of that.
Diablo Has Defeated Sanctuary
Diablo 5 does not begin with Sanctuary waiting for the next apocalypse because this time, it has already happened.
Diablo won and now rules from the throne of Westmarch, using its people and souls as weapons in the Eternal Conflict. You wanted Diablo in your Diablo game, well, it looks like you are getting him really good this time! Instead of being this distant threat waiting at the end of the game, the Lord of Terror will be present from the very beginning.
You will play as the Heir to Westmarch, running through the remains of a kingdom that has been transformed into an outpost of Hell. Humanity has almost been wiped out, with some survivors joining Diablo's cults and others being corrupted into terrifying Dread Commanders.

Your character also has a mysterious connection to Diablo, making you a threat to him, but also more vulnerable to his influence.
It sets up a very different kind of Diablo story. You are not trying to stop Sanctuary from falling. You are fighting to take it back.
Sanctuary Itself Is Changing
The Western Continent will be the main continent of Diablo 5, and Blizzard is going for a world that feels like it is being completely changed by Diablo.
The team showed off a desolate Sanctuary filled with ruins, corruption, and the remnants of humanity trying to survive. But the world will not necessarily look the same every time you return to an area. Blizzard says Diablo 5 will have a procedural landscape, with terrain, points of interest, monsters, and rewards able to change between visits.

That could make exploration feel very different from previous Diablo games, especially in a world where the landscape itself is being twisted by Diablo's influence.
Your Town Is Now a Caravan
Wherever you go, so does your home. With towns and strongholds no longer providing safe havens, your main home will instead be a caravan of survivors that grows as you progress. The caravan will include vendors and companions who travel with you, and each character brings their own stories and experiences from surviving Diablo's reign.

Yes, one of those companions is a stranded Treasure Goblin who is apparently trying to find meaning in a world where greed has lost its purpose.
We are already sold.
Demon Hunter, Monk, and Plague Knight
Blizzard also revealed the first three classes coming to Diablo 5, with two familiar ones returning and an entirely new class.
Demon Hunter
The Demon Hunter is back, bringing their twin crossbows and acrobatic combat style to Diablo 5
The class will once again focus on striking from the shadows, leaping around the battlefield, and tearing through the forces of Hell from range
Monk
The Monk is also returning, bringing martial arts and holy power back to Sanctuary
The class combines close-range attacks with divine abilities, giving you another way to get up close and personal with demons
Plague Knight
Then there is the new one, the Plague Knight
The Plague Knight is built around disease and pestilence, spreading corruption across the battlefield before consuming it to gain power

These are only the first three classes Blizzard plans to reveal, so we will have to wait a bit until we learn more about them, but also about all the other classes that might join the fight.
Diablo 5 Is Going Back to Classic Itemization
Blizzard also spent some time talking about one of the most important parts of any Diablo game, and it is, of course, loot.
This time, they want Diablo 5's items to feel readable, memorable, and worth chasing, and not just another pile of stats to replace every few minutes. The game's itemization is being heavily inspired by Diablo II, and Blizzard is experimenting with stat requirements on gear on top of bringing back larger items that take up more space in your inventory.
Gear-based sets will also return, with a better crafting system inspired by the approach taken with Lord of Hatred.

Yes, Diablo II-style Runes and Runewords are coming back as well.
They also teased the idea of items growing alongside your character, with gear starting out relatively simple before becoming something much more meaningful as you continue your journey.
It is still early, but it seems like they want to make finding a great item feel exciting again.
Diablo 5 Is Still Years Away
There is still a lot we do not know about Diablo 5, and Blizzard is making it clear that the game is very early in development. They plan to start sharing regular updates in 2027, with development progress, upcoming features, and the ideas behind the game.
For now, though, we already have a pretty good idea of what to look forward to!
Sanctuary has fallen. Diablo has won. The old heroes are gone, and a new generation has to figure out what comes next. With the Demon Hunter, Monk, and Plague Knight leading the charge, Diablo 5 is already looking very different from its predecessors. Now we just have to get ready for Spring 2029!
