Diablo 5 is replacing towns with a caravan of survivors
The real safe place is not a location. It is the people you bring along.

Possibly one of the most interesting details of BlizzCon 2026's big Diablo 5 reveal is that there will be no town to go back to after every trip into the wild, because there will be no hub or safe haven waiting for us anywhere. Diablo, the Lord of Terror, has won; Sanctuary has fallen, and Blizzard's current plans are to replace our usual town hub with a caravan of survivors.
The caravan will move through the campaign with us, the player, and grow as we meet more people. However, we will not simply collect NPCs and vendors as we go, but also make friends and find new companions that join us on our travels. Most interestingly, every character that becomes part of our caravan also provides new side content for us to complete.
You Are the Safe Place Now
During the Diablo 5 panel at BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard explained that every town has been destroyed, and Strongholds will not become permanent refuges either. The player character itself, as well as followers that join throughout the campaign, will instead become the closest thing Sanctuary has to a safe place. As per the official overview that was shared by Blizzard, caravan members can serve as both vendors and companions. The panel also mentioned craftspeople, so the services we would normally find inside a town are planned to travel with us.
Every Side Quest Travels With You
The caravan also changes where Diablo 5's side quests come from. In Diablo IV, we often just found random civilians standing beside the road with another job for us, but in Diablo V, every side quest will come from someone traveling with the caravan. But that also brings up an interesting question... If we can choose who joins the caravan, could those decisions change which side quests and stories become available? Blizzard has not explained how recruitment works yet, so we do not know.

Familiar Faces Around a New Campfire
Blizzard has already introduced two people who can join the caravan. One of them is a former Sister of the Sightless Eye, the order connected to the Rogue from the original Diablo, and the other is a stranded Treasure Goblin trying to find a new purpose in a world where greed has lost its meaning. It seems Sanctuary is now in such a terrible state that even Treasure Goblins are having an existential crisis...
Blizzard compared the caravan to Diablo 2's Rogue Encampment, which is a small corner of safety filled with people we get to know. Of course, the big difference here is that this camp travels with us instead of staying behind.
Part of the Adventure
Nevertheless, Diablo 5 has only just been announced for spring 2029, and it is still early in development, so there is a lot we do not know yet. Blizzard has not shown how we will manage the caravan, how often it moves, or how recruitment works; but replacing the usual town with a group of survivors traveling beside us could make returning home feel like part of the adventure, rather than a break from it.
