Diablo 4 Season 16 PTR nerfs the two best Warlock builds of Season 15

Hellfire loses its edge while Overmind and Command Laalish push Abyss builds to the front.

A stylized illustration of a Diablo 4 Warlock character standing in front of a dark red textured background. The character wears ornate armor with a prominent horned helmet and holds a glowing, curved staff. The word WARLOCK appears in large, dark Gothic lettering behind the character. On the lower left, stylized typography reads, "IF IT IS HELL YOU WANT, I CAN ARRANGE A MEETING".

The 3.3.0 PTR for Diablo 4 Season 16 went live on October 27 and ends on November 3. After a Season 15 where Warlock sat at the very top of almost all tier lists, we expected the class to get some nerfs for the next season.

The two builds that defined Season 15, Blazing Scream and Apocalypse, lose damage on their core skills and on multiple key Uniques. However, Command Laalish, the Overmind Paragon node, Abyssal Titan and Fiend of Abaddon get a much-needed boost.

Everything below is based on PTR patch notes. Numbers can and will change before Season 16 goes live.

The Most Important Changes for Warlock in Season 16

If we had to recap the patch notes in 5 bullet points, this is what we would focus on.

  • Elegy gets a full rework. The sword now only boosts the mini skulls' damage for the Channeled variants of Blazing Scream. In Season 15, Elegy had a heavy impact on Blazing Scream by adding Skull Splitter for free and letting the small skulls hit as hard as the main one. Blizzard left it unclear which of those effects will stay. This is quite an open question for all Warlock players.

  • Apocalypse needs twice the stacks for the same reward. Annihilation now caps at 200 stacks instead of 100, and each stack is worth 20% instead of 40%. It will take twice as many Hellfire hits to reach the previous result.

  • Many Hellfire Uniques were nerfed. Moloch's Beating Flame, Hands of the Worldbreaker, Infernal Homunculus and the The Eightfold Idol all lost quite some damage on their Hellfire damage. None of these are huge nerfs, but all together, they add up.

  • Overmind receives a significant buff. The Legendary Paragon node goes from 45% damage to Crowd Controlled enemies and 65% to Elites, to 120% damage against Crowd Controlled enemies with a further 100% to Elites. Abyss damage on Elites also generates Dominance. It looks like we will see some builds using Abyss as their main source of damage in Season 16.

  • Command Laalish is changed and rebuilt around Shadowform. Laalish becomes a Recast skill; his Terror Realm lasts 50% longer and can be moved. The Unfathomable Fragment now adds 4 maximum Shadowform and 20% damage to Non-Recast Abyss skills that no longer break Stealth. Rictus of Terror interacts with this by giving the fragment for free at double the power.

Season 15 Warlock Standings

Warlock spent Seasons 13 and 14 at the bottom of the class rankings, which was quite surprising for a newly added class. Season 15 turned it into the strongest class everyone wanted to play.

We should not forget that the Splinter of the Black Soulstone helped multiple Season 15 builds do an extraordinary amount of damage, but this was a seasonal power, and we do not expect it to stay in Season 16.

Did the Nerfs Hit Last Season's Top Builds?

Definitely. Both S-Tier Hellfire builds lose a lot of power. Abyss and summon builds that sat lower on the tier list are getting the most buffs.

The Hellfire builds are the most impacted by the changes, with Blazing Scream taking the biggest nerf, and Apocalypse needing longer to set up. Tyrant's Grasp slows down as well.

The builds to look out for are the Abyss and summon builds. Abyss Rampage looks like a safe Warlock pick for Season 16.

What We Still Do Not Know

  • The final Unique Power of Elegy. The patch notes are not very clear on this, and the item might heavily impact Blazing Scream.

  • Will Horadric Items be impactful for Warlocks? The new system allows you to combine multiple Talisman set bonuses. Check the Horadric Items affixes here.

  • PTR Tuning. The PTR will likely see more changes before going live for Season 16 on December 1st.
