Diablo 5 Monk Guide, Everything Confirmed So Far

Monochrome Diablo 5 concept art of a muscular Monk with prayer beads and a headband, shown in a combat stance.

The Monk is back, and it skipped a whole game (Diablo 4) to get here. Blizzard confirmed it at BlizzCon 2026 as one of the first three classes in Diablo 5 (Diablo V), which makes it the first main-series Monk since Diablo 3.

Although knowing that the Monk will be part of the franchise's next game is great news, it is unfortunately all we know. Blizzard has not named a single Monk skill, resource, or passive yet. We have one line of official description, one remark from the game director, and a concept sketch. That still tells us a fair bit about how the class will likely play, so here is all of it in one place, and this page grows as Blizzard shares more.

What Blizzard Has Confirmed

Blizzard's official BlizzCon recap describes the Monk bringing martial perfection back to Sanctuary, beating demons into pulp with its fists and calling down holy power on anything that stands in its way.

Senior Game Director Joe Shely put it in plainer terms on stage. You will once again "pulpify demons with your fists," and if a demon is out of range, you call down holy light to smite it.

That second part is the interesting one. Shely framed the holy power as the answer to enemies you cannot reach, so the Diablo 5 Monk looks like a melee class with a built-in ranged backup. The concept sketch in the reveal post shows a bearded, bare-chested fighter with prayer beads and a wrapped fist.

Most Monk Details Are Still Unknown

As exciting as it is, not a lot of information exists (yet). Blizzard has not shared:

  • Any skill, passive, or skill tree

  • The class resource (Spirit is a Diablo 3 mechanic, not confirmed for Diablo 5)

  • If Mantras or any group support return

  • Any weapon type. Fists are the only attack Blizzard has described.

  • Gender options, appearance, or customization

  • How the class fits the story, where you play as the Heir to Westmarch

Blizzard plans regular development updates starting in 2027, with more on class combat, progression, and builds.

How the Monk Played in Diablo 3

None of this is confirmed for Diablo 5, but it shows where the class comes from. The Diablo 3 Monk built Spirit with quick punch combos, then spent it on big hits like Seven-Sided Strike, Cyclone Strike, and Wave of Light, the one that dropped a giant holy bell on enemies.

The Monk's resource in Diablo 3 is Spirit, shown here in the class resource display.

It also had Mantras, aura-style buffs that helped the whole group, and it could fight with fist weapons, daibos, and staves. Wave of Light is the closest Diablo 3 match to "calling down holy power", though Blizzard has not said anything about it returning.

Should You Play Monk in Diablo 5?

If you like fast melee and want a reason to stay in close without losing every runner, this looks like your class. Diablo 4 never had a Monk, so Spiritborn players are probably the closest match for that martial, acrobatic feel.

Diablo 4's official Spiritborn image shows the class fighting with a polearm surrounded by spectral energy and jungle creatures.

If you want heavy armor and to soak hits instead of dodging them, keep an eye on the Plague Knight. If you never want to be in melee range at all, the Demon Hunter is your pick. That is our read of the descriptions, not a confirmed role split.

How Diablo 5 Loot Could Change the Monk

Blizzard's item plans could matter a lot for a class that fights with its fists. Officially:

  • Itemization takes its cues from Diablo 2

  • Blizzard is experimenting with stat requirements on gear

  • Bigger items take up more inventory space again

  • Gear-based sets return

  • Diablo 2-style Runes and Runewords are coming, with crafting inspired by Lord of Hatred

The question we keep coming back to is how a fist-fighting class works with Diablo 2-style runewords, which have always lived on weapons and armor. Blizzard has not said if the Monk uses weapons at all. Diablo 3 fans will also hope sets bring back the iconic Monk gear. Both are open questions, not promises.

Fists for the close stuff, holy light for the runners. We would happily take that into a fallen Sanctuary.
