WoW Forever is fixing restricted names and an Oceanic character creation bug

Blizzard is fixing an overly strict name filter, while Oceanic players face a separate ruleset bug.

WoW Forever Rulesets

It turns out Early Name Reservation for WoW Forever is not exactly going smoothly.

If you have access to the feature, you might have run into one of the following two bugs during your early character name reservations.

One issue incorrectly blocks ordinary names containing certain letter combinations, and the other one is only for Oceanic players, since they cannot currently access Rulesets in the order they would want to.

Overall, these do not prevent you from creating characters, but they are still annoying bugs. But Blizzard is working on both.

A Slightly Too Restrictive Filter

When it comes to character names, players tend to be... a little bit too creative. And because of the number of people who had to get banned during beta because of their names, Blizzard set up extremely restrictive filters for the Early Name Creation. Well, turns out they went a bit too hard on that.

WoW Forever also uses a restricted name list to block names it does not allow for reasons beyond profanity, such as main Warcraft lore characters or names that cause technical issues.

Blizzard has now found a bug that makes this filter too restrictive. Names containing "con" as an example of a letter combination were being incorrectly blocked.

The fix is planned for the next realm restarts in each region. If you received a "That name is restricted" message for a name you believe should be allowed, you can try again after your region's restart.

In WoW Forever, we’ve been working on the restricted name list, which is a list the game uses to check for non-profane names that we wish to restrict, such as major Warcraft lore characters or names that are blocked for technical reasons.

Today we’ve determined that we have a bug in the process that caused the game to be overly restrictive with some names. For example, it has been incorrectly restricting names containing “c-o-n”.

With the next realm restarts in each region, we’re going to implement the fix. Afterward, if you previously received a message that said “That name is restricted” for a name that you think should have been allowed, please feel free to try again.

Thank you!

Oceanic Players Need to Create Roleplay Characters First

In the meantime, Oceanic players are apparently forced into Roleplay...

There is a bug that can lock you out of RP servers if you pick anything else first. If you want to reserve a character on a Roleplay or Roleplay-PvP ruleset, create that character before making one on Normal or PvP.

Creating a Normal or PvP character first can make the Roleplay rulesets unavailable for your remaining character reservations.

This issue should only affect Oceanic players connecting to Australian servers, and they are trying to fix it as fast as possible.

Attention Oceanic players connecting to Australian-based servers!

Due to a bug, you must create any characters on Roleplay or Roleplay-PvP rulesets before creating characters on Normal or PvP rulesets.

If you first create a character on the Normal or PvP ruleset, the Roleplay and Roleplay-PvP rulesets will no longer be available for subsequent characters.

This issue should only be present for players in the Oceanic region who are connecting to Australian servers, and we’re working on a fix for it urgently.

Thank you!

Name reservations remain open until November 3, ahead of WoW Forever's launch on November 4, so you still have time if you are running into any bugs right now.
