Diablo 4 Season 15 brings back iconic bosses in Waking Nightmares

Old Diablo locations and enemies are returning in three very different nightmare encounters.

Blizzard was not exaggerating when it called Season 15 a trip down memory lane at BlizzCon. Waking Nightmares bring bosses, locations, and enemies from previous Diablo games into Diablo 4, and they come in three very different forms.

This part of the season was not available during the 3.2.0 PTR, so everyone will be seeing it for the first time when Season 15 begins. Blizzard has not simply dropped the old encounters into the current game, either. They have been rebuilt with new visuals and fights that fit Diablo 4.

The Big Waking Nightmares Work Like Capstones

The largest Waking Nightmares are multi-level dungeons based on historic battles against the Prime Evils. You will first enter them during the Season 15 questline, but you can return afterward and replay them on Torment difficulties for better rewards.

Much like Capstone Dungeons, each one has a fixed difficulty. You cannot simply gain a few more levels, come back later, and walk through it. Once you reach Torment 10, harder Pinnacle versions become available with stronger enemies and better loot.

These dungeons also let you change the Splinter of Evil your character is carrying. Since your choice determines which reputation path and seasonal bonuses you are working on, the largest Waking Nightmares will remain useful after you finish the questline.

The Den of Evil Returns as a Full Dungeon

The next version is much closer to a regular Diablo 4 dungeon. These appear at fixed locations around Sanctuary and recreate familiar moments from earlier games. Blizzard used the Den of Evil from Diablo 2 as one example. Longtime players should recognize parts of the location and its encounters, although everything has been rebuilt inside Diablo 4.

That is probably the coolest part of Waking Nightmares. Veterans get to revisit places they remember, but newer players can experience them without needing to know every part of Diablo's history first.

The Smallest Nightmares Can Find You Anywhere

Then there are the brief open-world encounters. These can appear without warning and throw you into a one-room fight against an enemy from Diablo's past. Blizzard showed Queen Araneae, the giant spider boss from Diablo 3, as one example. You can also encounter waves of familiar monsters such as the dagger-wielding Flayers.

So you could be making your way through Sanctuary and suddenly run into something you have not fought in years. These smaller encounters sound like a fun way to bring the anniversary theme into the open world without turning every memory into another full dungeon.

Diablo 4 Is Looking Back Before Moving Forward

Yes, Waking Nightmares reuse locations and enemies from previous Diablo games, but that is also the entire idea behind them. Instead of simply bringing back old boss models, Blizzard is rebuilding those memories so we can play through them again in Diablo 4.

The timing feels appropriate too. Diablo 5 is now official, but Diablo 4 still has plenty ahead of it. Season of Hell’s Legacy gives us a chance to look back at the battles that brought the series here before its next chapter begins.

Diablo 4 Season 15 begins on September 15, bringing Waking Nightmares and the rest of Season of Hell’s Legacy to Sanctuary.
