Diablo 4 War Plans Guide: How to Unlock, Build, and Optimize Your Plans

Diablo 4 War Plan Showing the different plans on a world map

War Plans were introduced with the Lord of Hatred expansion, and they are your main way to progress after Level 70. You use War Plans to build your farming route through different endgame modes, unlock bonuses in their respective activity trees, and target the rewards that you need most.

This guide explains how to unlock War Plans, how the system works, which activities you can include, and how to get the most out of it.

What Are War Plans in Diablo 4?

You only get access to War Plans after completing the Lord of Hatred Campaign. You can then travel to Temis to find the command table and create a War Plan to chain activities together for better rewards at the end.

When you interact with the table, you will see two different things:

  • The plan on the left

  • The War Plan Trees on the right

The plan is where you pick your activities. At first, you will only be able to choose two activities, but this increases as you complete plans. Some have bonuses tied to them, and you will get additional rewards at the end, so these are usually the ones you want to target.

There are a total of 7 different activities, and they all have their specific War Plan Tree that you can see on the right side of the previous image:

  • Whisper Tree

  • Nightmare Dungeons

  • Helltides

  • Kurast Undercity

  • Lair Bosses

  • Infernal Hordes

  • Pit

At the command table, pick the activities you want to complete. You can pick a maximum of 5. When you are satisfied with your choices, start your War Plan. You will have a quest that tracks the next activity you need to complete. Go through all 5 of them and head back to Temis to hand it in. The chest near the table will open and give you your rewards.

Basically, you stop losing time trying to figure out what to do next, and you have more control over your endgame activities and your rewards.

Best Bonus Rewards

When picking your War Plan, always check the nodes that have bonus rewards. You will spot them directly since they will have an additional icon under them.

If you hover over that activity, you will see exactly what the bonus is. These can roll between:

  • Experience Orbs

  • Horadric Reagents

  • Obducite

  • Armor

  • Weapons

  • Jewelry

  • Dungeon Keys

  • Salvaging Materials

  • Gold and Obols

  • Gem Fragments

  • Runes

  • Talismans

Things like Horadric Reagents, Obducite, Salvaging Materials, or even Dungeon Keys tend to be the best ones. They also rank from "Small Amount" to "Mythic Amount", and Mythic grants a bigger bonus.

Completing War Plans rewards experience and rank points for your Plan and Trees, and opening the chests will also grant various materials, gear, runes, and more, depending on the nodes and bonuses you picked.

Can You Reroll a War Plan?

Yes, you can reroll your War Plan if you are not happy with the current choices. However, it does cost 1 Marks of El'Druin per reroll.

You gain these Marks by completing War Plans, so do not be scared to reroll if needed. You can only hold a maximum of 3, so you essentially can only reroll 3 times per Plan. And nothing ever guarantees that the next plan will be better.

War Plans in a Party

You can complete War Plans with your friends, but they come with a few conditions and problems.

First, group up with your friends and meet in Temis near the command table. Then, one of you needs to spend 2 Marks of El'Druin to reroll the Solo Plan for a Party one.

Diablo 4 War Plan Party Reroll option.

Select "New Plan for Party" to reroll. The entire party will now see the same activities in the same order.

The next step is where you have to be careful. Make sure to coordinate on the activities you want to complete. Everyone needs to pick the same ones on their own command table.

Once this is done, you can start the War Plan and head to your first activity. If everyone made the same selections, you will have the same plan.

If you are not satisfied, any party member that still owns 2 Marks of El'Druin can reroll it for the entire group again.

War Plans Skill Trees

Each activity has its own Skill Tree, and a total of 7 points can be allocated to each tree. You gain experience by completing the required activities.

War Plan reputation and progression are shared between characters in the same Seasonal or Eternal, Hardcore or non-Hardcore, and Solo Self-Found or normal category. Each character still has its own War Plan and node selections.

You can change the nodes you pick in your Trees at any time and pick other ones. This allows you to take bonuses depending on what you currently need. However, certain nodes are overall better than the rest, no matter what you are currently doing.

Tree of Whisper

Diablo 4 Tree of Whisper War Plan Tree

For the Tree of Whisper, the middle path is usually the most important. You want to prioritize the following nodes first:

  • Tree of Plenty for a fourth cache choice

  • Wisdom of Whispers for +50% more Experience Orbs from caches

  • Grim Mysteries

  • Resplendent Favor

After that, we recommend the right Path with Grim Retribution and Colossal Foe. If you are playing a Hardcore character, do not pick Malignant Invasion, because it makes things unnecessarily dangerous for not that many great rewards.

Nightmare Dungeons

For the Nightmare Dungeon Tree, the left path should be prioritized with the following nodes:

  • Waking Spoils

  • Gauntlet

  • Fearless Conviction

This lets you accumulate a lot of Attuned Primordial Dust which you need to reroll your affixes on your Uniques.

After that, it depends on what you need. Nemesis is great if you want to farm Elite enemies, the middle path is the best if you plan on farming Escalating Dungeons, and the right path is great for Goblin-related bonuses.

Helltide

Diablo 4 War Plan Helltide Tree

For Helltides, the most important nodes are Hellmouth and Writhe and Rot in the middle, especially while you are leveling, since they provide huge amounts of experience. After that, you can swap Writhe and Rot for the right side until you reach Undying Embers because it prevents you from losing Cinders when you die during Helltides.

Kurast Undercity

Diablo 4 Kurast Undercity War Plan Tree

For Kurast, choices are more free. If you want additional chances for more rewards, you can pick the left path with Endless Swarm, Unfortunate Souls, and Gutter Filth. We recommend the right side more, because it will open a portal as soon as you reach maximum Attunement, and it makes Undercity runs much faster.

Lair Bosses

Diablo 4 War Plan Lair Bosses Tree

When it comes to the Lair Bosses tree, the path is really straightforward. There are three extremely important nodes, and these are the middle ones:

  • Two by Two

  • Greater Nemesis

  • Ultimate Nemesis

With these activated, after opening a Hoard Chest, you will have a chance for a Portal to open that will take you to a Nemesis Lair. There, you will have to fight two bosses at the same time, and the loot you get from there is insane. Greater and Ultimate add a chance for additional portals with more Bosses and even more rewards.

Lair of Runes is also a good node if you need more Runes.

Infernal Hordes

Diablo 4 Infernal Hordes War Plan tree

For the Infernal Hordes, it depends on what you need. We recommend the middle path first because Total Chaos increases the chance to get Chaos Waves, and that means more Aether.

However, the left side is also rather good if you make it all the way to Infernal Hoard because it grants more items at the end of your run.

The Pit

Diablo 4 The Pit War Plan Tree

The last War Plan Tree is for the Pit, and there are a few things you can do with this one. Generally, you want to pick the first node in the middle, Choron's Blessing, because it grants +1 Glyph Upgrade Chance, and you definitely need that.

After that, go for the left path all the way to Damned Thieves. Orb Thieves will appear, and they drop a huge amount of Progress Orbs when killed.
