Diablo 4 Paragon Glyphs Guide: How to Find and Upgrade Glyphs

A player levels a Glyph at the Awakened Glyph Stone in the PIt.

Glyphs are powerful items that socket into special nodes on your Paragon Boards. They have their own leveling system, accessed in the Pit, and they give scaling bonuses according to their level and their placement within a specific board. You will start to pick them up in the world once you have hit the character level cap of 70.

What Are Glyphs?

Much like Runes, Glyphs are physical objects that drop like loot. They offer a set of bonuses once you have socketed them in your Paragon boards. Often, but not always, that bonus scales with the number of stat point nodes unlocked within their radius, which grows as you upgrade them in the Pit. Each Glyph relies on a specific character stat, and additional bonuses become available once a stat threshold is reached. They gain an even stronger, Legendary bonus when you upgrade them to Level 51.

On the Death Aura Warlock glyph shown here, you can see that the initial bonus is active, as is the Additional Bonus that unlocks when the player has purchased sufficient Willpower within its radius. This glyph's bonus does not scale with every Willpower node, so the player does not necessarily need to spend additional points here.

Since the player has not upgraded the Glyph to Level 25, the radius is only three, as indicated on the rollover tooltips.

Finally, the Legendary upgrade, shown in greyed-out text at the bottom, will add another significant damage bonus once the Glyph has been upgraded to Legendary. We will discuss how upgrading Glyphs works, and some tips for doing it efficiently, below.

While most Glyphs are class-specific, a few are shared among all classes. They are not tradable, and your individual characters do not share Glyphs, so if you level multiple characters in the same Season, you will have to upgrade Glyphs twice.

Where to Find Glyphs

Once your character hits Level 70, Glyphs will start to drop from all activities, including Helltide chests, Whisper caches, and even overworld monster-slaying. They appear on the map like any other equipment, and while your pet will not pick them up for you, they are clearly labeled in a unique text color so you will see them when they drop.

Glyph Upgrades and Radius

Upgrading Glyphs increases their radius, which in turn increases their power. A Glyph's Legendary ability upgrade technically unlocks at Level 50, but you will actually purchase the upgrade with 15,000 gem fragments when you upgrade it to 51.

Radius increases occur at Levels 25 and 51.

  • Glyph Levels 1-24: 3 squares

  • Glyph Levels 25-49: 4 squares

  • Glyph Levels 51+: 5 squares

Glyph radius matters because it allows you to purchase significantly more stat point nodes within its range. Some Glyph bonuses scale with the number of stat point nodes purchased within their radius, while others offer bonuses to any Rare nodes in their radius, so consider their socket placement and your Paragon node selections carefully to maximize those bonuses.

How to Upgrade Glyphs

Glyphs are exclusively upgraded in the Pit. After clearing the Pit and slaying the boss within the time limit, you can use the Awakened Glyphstone for three chances to upgrade Glyphs, with an additional chance available if you did not die during the run. You do not need to spend all your chances on the same Glyph.

The likelihood of success when upgrading a Glyph depends on the difficulty of the Pit you have completed. If the Pit Tier was ten or more levels above the Glyph's level, the chance to succeed is 100%. The closer in level the Pit and your Glyph are, the smaller that chance becomes, and if the Pit Tier you have run is too far below your Glyph's level, you simply will not be able to upgrade it.

Paragon Glyph Tips

  • Different Glyph sockets are surrounded by clusters of different stat point nodes, so you will want to consider which Glyph best suits each of your Paragon Boards.

  • While it may be tempting to run the highest Pit tier you can complete, it is often more efficient to repeatedly run a lower-level Pit you can finish quickly. As long as the Pit tier remains 10 levels above the Glyph level, and you do not die, you will get at least four guaranteed upgrades.

  • Use War Plan Nodes before running Pits to add more chances to upgrade your Glyphs.

  • Players often offer Pit carries to newcomers, so do not be afraid to check the party finder.
