Of everything Blizzard could reveal at BlizzCon, a Diablo 1 remaster fits best
No proof it exists, but the anniversary timing keeps pulling us back to the idea.
As we mentioned in our previous news, Blizzard has already teased that players will "freak out" over what the team has planned for BlizzCon. 2026 is especially interesting, as Diablo also turns 30 this year, so the studio surely has something special waiting for the opening show. And if Blizzard wants a big anniversary reveal to celebrate a proper franchise moment befitting the situation, there is one idea that feels more fitting than anything else, and that is the return of Diablo 1.
The original Diablo opened the doors to Sanctuary back in December 1996. Bringing it back now would give the anniversary a great "full-circle moment", so to speak, and at the same time create the perfect opportunity to introduce the beginning of the series to everyone who joined later through Diablo 3, Diablo Immortal, or Diablo 4. We are far from the only ones thinking this, either. Quite a few players on Reddit, the official Forums, and social media came to that same conclusion/theory, with a Diablo 1 remaster or remake feeling almost inevitable at this point.
Blizzard Is Already Revisiting the Classics
There is a good reason why this feels like more than just wishful thinking, too. Blizzard has clearly been in a mood to revisit its older games. Diablo 2 Resurrected recently got the Warlock, the first new class added to the game in 25 years, which is a much bigger move than simply leaving an old title in maintenance mode. So, if they are willing to add a whole new class to a game from way back then, a modern version of the original no longer sounds like such a crazy idea.
But Nothing Is Confirmed
But none of this is confirmed. There is no leak, no datamine, not even a suspicious bit of breadcrumbs, nothing; so this is pure speculation built on anniversary timing and hope. All we have is Blizzard's own BlizzCon tease, and a lot of excitement for what is to come.
There is, however, also a fair argument to be made against it, since you can already play the original Diablo DRM-free on GOG, which means the game itself is not lost to time and is already available for players who are interested in trying it. An official re-release would still bring it to consoles and put it in front of people who would never think to look for it on GOG, but the need is not quite as urgent as it once was for Diablo 2.
