Could Overland Ambushes secretly be part of Diablo 4's upcoming Witcher crossover?
A confirmed crossover, a mysterious Season 15 encounter, and one very tempting theory connecting them.

The Witcher is coming to Diablo 4, and Blizzard is keeping the interesting part secret.
You probably heard of it already. During Gamescom, Blizzard and CD Projekt Red announced that they will bring The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Remastered to Battle.net. We also know that anyone who buys The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Songs of the Past on the Blizzard launcher will receive a Geralt-inspired skin in Diablo 4. And both Blizzard and CDPR also confirmed that they will reveal more details at BlizzCon in September, so there is definitely more to it than just a new Geralt skin.
What Does The Witcher Have to Do With Monster Hunting?
If you never played The Witcher, the connection might not directly make sense, but you have to remember that Geralt is not just a swordsman. He is a Witcher, and Witchers are basically professional monster hunters.
In The Witcher 3, you spend a lot of time traveling through the open world and tracking down monsters. Once you find them, you prepare your strategy for the fight and take down the monster.
Geralt uses two very specific swords, Signs (special Witcher "spells"), potions, oils, and his Witcher Senses to deal with the different creatures. His swords are crafted for two different targets: one is made out of steel to fight humans and non-magical creatures, and the other one is made out of silver for any supernatural creature.

In other words, hunting monsters is basically the job description, and that is why it would perfectly fit inside Diablo 4, with one unique feature coming in Season 15.
Overland Ambush = The Witcher Event?
During the Season 15 PTR, Blizzard introduced Overland Ambush, a rare encounter that can trigger when you are exploring Sanctuary. In the PTR, it was a rather simple and not that exciting feature. A powerful demon begins hunting you, a warning shows that you are about to become prey, and then you have 30 seconds to either flee or fight.
That is basically all Blizzard has shown us.
But what if this system is more than just a random demon encounter?
What if Blizzard takes the basic Overland Ambush idea and turns it into a Witcher-themed event?
Instead of simply being attacked by another demon, imagine hunting down powerful monsters across Sanctuary, tracking them through the open world and taking them on for special rewards. This idea was shared on Reddit by some players, and it does make sense in a way. It would fit The Witcher's identity extremely well and still make perfect sense in Diablo 4. And for once, we would have a really cool event instead of just getting a themed Reliquary and paid skins for the occasion.
But There Is a Big "If"
There is no evidence that the Overland Ambush feature has anything to do with The Witcher. The Season 15 PTR notes never mention CD Projekt Red or The Witcher, and the official crossover announcement only confirms the Geralt skin and upcoming details at BlizzCon. So, it is still all just speculation.
The collaboration could end up being nothing more than a skin and some other cosmetics. Or Blizzard could have a proper in-game event planned. Maybe Blizzard has been testing the foundation for a monster-hunting event without telling us. Or it might not be related at all.
The only thing that is 100% sure is that we will find out at BlizzCon, so get ready for September!
